Engineering Precision in Newcastle’s East End Public Art

Thursday 5th February 2026

Suspended stainless steel public art installation in Newcastle’s East End laneway, supported by a tensioned cable system.
Arcus Wire Group is proud to have supported the delivery of a distinctive public art installation in Newcastle’s East End, where engineering precision and stainless steel performance play a critical role in bringing sculptural form and light into a dense urban laneway.

Designed by artist Col Henry, the installation features a series of suspended light sculptures positioned above the public thoroughfare. Delivering the final outcome required careful coordination between artistic intent, engineering requirements and on-site execution, particularly within the constraints of a narrow urban environment.

Engineering and Installation

At the core of the installation is a stainless steel suspension system engineered for accuracy, durability and long-term performance.

The system incorporated:

  • 8.0mm 1×19 G316 hamma® X stainless steel wire rope
  • hamma® Regatta swage terminations
These components were selected for their strength, corrosion resistance and suitability for performance-critical architectural applications.

Installation was delivered by Bespoke Wire and Rope, who fabricated and installed each individual cable on site. Using mobile rigging equipment and a local franna crane, the artworks were temporarily suspended while cables were manufactured and installed in situ. This approach allowed for exact cable lengths, fine adjustment during installation and reduced risk compared to pre-fabricated assemblies.

Ongoing Maintenance and Long-Term Care

Ongoing inspection and maintenance form an important part of the long-term performance of the installation in an exposed urban environment.

Bespoke Wire and Rope supports this ongoing care through a structured inspection programme, monitoring cable tensions, connection points and hardware condition over time. This proactive approach helps preserve the integrity of the system and ensures it continues to perform as intended.

Projects like this reflect Arcus Wire Group’s role in supporting technically demanding public and architectural installations through proven stainless steel systems, engineering knowledge and trusted delivery partners.
