Completed tensioned cable balustrade at ICOM Admin and Wellness Centre, Tarneit Victoria

Arcus Wire Group is proud to showcase the completed Islamic College of Melbourne (ICOM) Admin & Wellness Centre in Tarneit, Victoria

Delivered by Bespoke Wire & Rope as Design & Construction partner, in collaboration with Architect PMDL McGlashan Everist and Builder Haddarco, the completed ICOM Tensioned Cable Balustrade features a vertical floor-to-ceiling tensioned cable balustrade system that reflects a considered balance between structural performance and architectural intent. Arcus Wire Group supported the project through the supply of hamma® stainless steel wire rope and hamma® Industrial swage fittings specified for the system.

Engineered for Minimal Impact and Maximum Precision

The brief centred on two staircases, with a clear objective of achieving minimal visible fixings across the structure. Cables were designed to pass through intermediate steel members, maintaining alignment while tying each cable back to the stringer.

On-site drilling constraints required careful detailing of hole sizes and spacings through the angled stringer to allow the vertical cables to pass through accurately. The completed result is a streamlined balustrade system that enhances transparency while maintaining structural integrity.

Materials Selected for Performance and Finish

The balustrade system incorporates:

• 3.5mm 1×7 hamma® Pro Strand stainless steel wire rope
• 4mm 7×7 hamma® X Strand stainless steel wire rope
• hamma® Industrial swage fittings

All cables were site swaged using the Wireteknik A270 to ensure accuracy and accommodate staging requirements. Bevelled washers were used for raked stringer connections, along with hamma® Industrial M12 cross clamps at handrail height, supporting both alignment and finish quality.

Coordinated Installation in an Active School Environment

Installation required careful sequencing with multiple trades due to limited access via the staircases. Steelwork, drilling, painting, cable hanging, ceiling cladding and handrail works were coordinated to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

The Bespoke Wire & Rope team operated with agility in a live school setting, maintaining precision while adapting to the realities of an active site.

OTHER ARTICLES

Installation was delivered by Bespoke Wire and Rope, who fabricated and installed each individual cable on site. Using mobile rigging equipment and a local franna crane, the artworks were temporarily suspended while cables were manufactured and installed in situ. This approach allowed for exact cable lengths, fine adjustment during installation and reduced risk compared to pre-fabricated assemblies.
